The anhkheg burrows in fertile soil, including farmland and forests, and ambushes prey from below. (Dave Trampier from Gary Gygax’s AD&D Monster Manual, TSR, 1977) In AD&D terms the anhkheg has a wide range of HD, a high AC, and a relatively high damage output, so a group of them could be a problem even for mid-high level characters.
Hazards of harvest time. (Dave Trampier from “The Ecology of the Anhkheg: Hunting down the farmers’ bane” by Mark Feil, Dragon magazine No. 117, TSR, January 1986.) This is a colorized version of Trampier’s illustration from the AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide.
